Grown by: Owen's Truck Farm
Owen’s Truck Farm, located on Rte 175 in Holderness, is in the business to provide safe and healthy food for the community. The best time to stop by is 7:00am – 7:00pm. Owen’s offers a large variety of vegetables. They’re specialty is greens (lettuce, arugula, kale, swiss chard, spinach), peas, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, strawberries and cut flowers. They sell herbs such as basil, cilantro, dill and parsley. The farm does not use pesticides or weed killers. “We are beyond organic”, Chris Owen’s explains “That’s a new way of saying we grow everything naturally but we don’t want to deal with the paperwork and bureaucracy to become certified organic”. Chris welcomes people to visit the farm to see for themselves how they operate. In fact, anything that is grown on the farm, customers are welcome to pick themselves and receive a small discount for their work.
The workers at Owen’s are always very helpful. When visiting you’ll find Tonia Austin who’s been at the farm for over 10 years and Noah (22) and Lucus (20) Owens – both of whom have been working on the farm since they were four. Wendell Shaffer, a certified florist, works on the weekends and lines the road with personally made bouquets. If customers prefer they can pick from the buckets of flowers and create their own bouquet.
“We keep our farmstand well stocked” said Owens. “Over the 22 years that we’ve been in business we have developed a network of farmers that sell to one another when stocks get low. That way when people make the trip to the farmstand they can be certain to find what they’re looking for.”
